Johnson & Groninger Reports a Client Win in Workers Compensation Appeal

William Smith won his workers compensation appeal against his employer, a paper mill in Roanoke Rapids, in October 2020. Mr. Smith has been unable to work because of injuries he sustained to his hand and arm while performing his job.  But the road to victory did not stop after his win.  The defendant, Kapstone (now called WestRock), appealed.  After a decision, workers’ compensation appeals go to the Full Commission of the North Carolina Industrial Commission.  The attorneys for both sides write briefs detailing the facts and the law as they see it.  Three commissioners sit on the panel and listen to the attorneys argue the case.

The Full Commission issued its decision to the Workers Compensation appeal, called an opinion and award, earlier this month. Mr. Smith won every issue in his case!

Cases often are appealed after an employee wins his or her case.  Our job is to take every step to protect our clients.  We congratulate Mr. Smith on his win!
